More about Shalini
Entering business for the first time can be daunting, as there are so many things to consider. I help startups get everything in order so they can achieve success in their business.
I have deep admiration for people who are stepping out into a new business for the first time – whether it is a young person with a big dream, or an older person who has had a life of work behind them and is looking for something new. I’m inspired by the ideas and journeys people have that lead them to make their decisions.
I was born in Fiji and lived there until I was eight years old. My family then moved to Brisbane and I completed schooling and my Bachelor of Business and Communication here. I gained so much valuable knowledge and skills that I would then take back with me to Fiji when I moved back there with my husband. We enjoyed our time and I was able to use my skills from university to teach high school English, work as a journalist, qualify in law and start up a legal practice, a childrenswear business and a guesthouse.
With my husbands support I was able to study law and then work in the legal practice. I was very good, but I realised I was even better at business. I often say to people that I’m obsessed with business, but I just happen to be a lawyer. This is where I am meant to work – with small businesses and entrepreneurs.
My service goes beyond providing legal documents for my clients. I teach valuable communication skills for those in the early stages of their business venture. I coach people on how to write documents and applications, initiate and handle negotiations and business conversations, how to collaborate with others in the field, and market themselves well so they can get the best results possible from their ongoing encounters with others in business.
There is a culture today to focus purely on marketing when trying to achieve business success. Marketing is incredibly important and it must be executed well, but there are other pillars that need to be put in place before a business can take off. Legal requirements, customer relations and protocols, and finances must be in order.
Starting my own business was scary – it is for anyone! However, I had the privilege of having university qualifications and knowledge behind me.
My business and communications degree gave me an edge with marketing and setting up the right framework, and my law degree gave me the knowledge to make sound legal choices that would stop any surprises down the track.
I am aware that not everyone gets the amazing opportunities that I had. I offer a comprehensive service to my clients so that they can be fully prepared, and so they can learn these skills without spending more than they can afford.
I believe in being generous, and if I can give someone the help they need without finances being a barrier to their success, I believe I have done some good in this world.
My clients need to work hard to achieve success in their business, but I can support them with setting up an excellent framework that covers all bases.
