Introducing Yourself Part 3

With all of this writing about you, I feel like you might know all of the elements of your story. It's like having a fully stocked pantry at home. You might be able to craft a meal with it, but if you put a 14 year old with no cooking experience in there, she might not end up with something edible.

What we're doing today is picking the best ingredients.

But first, what are we making?

You are making a page that people will read when they are considering buying your services.

The outcomes that we hope for from this page is to make it a no brainer for the right person and place you firmly in the mind of everyone else as the person who does X. Someday in the future when a friend of theirs is talking about X, they might remember you and recommend you. Or someday in the future when they have a need for X, they might remember you.

So long as we achieve those outcomes, pretty much nothing is off the table.

Keeping all this in mind, let's launch into the next activity.

Activity Three: Brainstorm and Research

You will need:

  • a countdown timer (the clock app on your phone will do just nicely)
  • your writing from the past two days
  • a computer with internet connection
  • about 30 minutes

Directions:

Re-read the very first bit that you wrote. The questions were:

  • Who is your ideal customer? Can you think of any specific people?
  • In an ideal world, how do you help them? How do you make their lives better? Why would they enjoy working with you?

With those customers in mind, set a 3 minute countdown timer.

List out as many things as you can for this question: How would you like them to see you?

Go.

------------------------------

Ok, now review the rest of your writing. Is there anything else you want to add?

Turn to a fresh page.

With your customers still in mind, set a 3 minute countdown timer.

List out as many things as you can for this question: What do you do for your customers?

Go.

------------------------------

Ok, now review the rest of your writing. Is there anything else you want to add?

Turn to a fresh page.

With your customers still in mind, set a 3 minute countdown timer.

List out as many things as you can for this question: Why should they choose you?

Go.

------------------------------

Ok, now review the rest of your writing. Is there anything else you want to add?

Now for a change of pace! List 5 people you admire. (2mins)

Jump on your computer and search for their about pages.

Give yourself 3mins per person and consider: What did you like knowing about them? What felt irrelevant? Did you get bored while reading? Around what point?
